CULE Statement for the International Day for Persons with Disabilities

The United Nations International Day for Persons with Disabilities began in 1992 as a day to promote awareness and inclusion in society of people with disabilities. The theme for 2015 is: “Inclusion matters: access and empowerment for people of all abilities.”

For people with disabilities (whether visible or not) and including those with mental health conditions, discrimination and stigma continue to exist in our society preventing full and equal access to many areas in society including employment, education, transportation, etc.

In workplaces across Canada, real barriers continue to exist for people with disabilities. CULE calls on all our members to commit to fighting all forms of discrimination against people with disabilities in our workplaces and larger society. We also support and will work towards the empowerment of all people with disabilities towards full access and equality in society.
